The Taste Of Hair

"New kind of comedy"

In the early beginning of pre-production on the film a lot of professional cast and crew workers showed interest in the manuscript. The budget of the film was very low, nonetheless some of Denmark's biggest stars chose to participate anyway, mainly because of the tone of humor in the film which differs from norm in Danish cinema. So suddenly and unexpected the young 25-year-old first time director had some of Denmarks most popular actors playing in his shortfilm and a professional crew working for him as well. The director Rene Frelle Petersen had been working as an assistant director for 3 years and many of the crew members on this film had been working together with Rene Frelle Petersen on other movies and chose to support and help him finish his first film.
But with a very tight budget the film was not able to finish the post-production all by itself. But then Zentropa Film Production and producer Peter Bech found out about this independent shortfilm and they decided to step in and help finish the project.

Director Statement

After I have been working as an assistant director for a few years I wanted to write and direct a shortfilm. A funny idea about telling a story from my neighbourhood included a special street in Copenhagen. It's known to be a kind of Ghetto Street and there are only pizza places, grocery shops, small night clubs and hairdresser salons. As a matter of fact there are a total of 27 salons in this street.
After visiting several hairdressers in the street I started writing a script about the tough competition among the many hairdressers and it became a very funny but also different story if you consider the comedies made in Denmark.
After receiving a small amount of production support from the Danish film institute I sent the script to some of my favourite actors but did not expect them to accept. But they did even though the budget was very tight. They told me that they loved the idea of the story and it was different for them to play that kind of characters.
Crew members, like photographer Anders Loefstedt and art director Sven Wichmann worked with me on other films and would like to make the film with me and suddenly we where a full crew and ready to shoot!
It was amazing. We had so much fun and the story started to unfold in this weird universe of hairdressers. Even in lunch break the actors where playing their crazy characters and they considered themselves as being a cowboy struggling to survive in a western city.
After finishing the film with the support from Lars Von Trier and Peter Aalbaeks film production company Zentropa I showed the film to a small group of hairdressers from the particular street and they loved it!
